Executive Bio
Dr. Alok Bhandari is the Dr. Robert Snell Civil Engineering Alumni Professor and Department Head of Civil Engineering at Kansas State University. He also serves as the Founding Director of the KSU Urban Water Institute, and the Supervisor of the Civil Infrastructure Systems Laboratory. Between 2008 and 2010 he was on the faculty at Iowa State University with appointment in the Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering department. From 1998 to 2007, Dr. Bhandari was a member of the civil engineering faculty at KSU, the founding Coordinator of KSU’s New Faculty Institute, and served a term as a Special Assistant to the Provost.
Dr. Bhandari is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s CAREER award, the Kansas-Science to Achieve Results (K-STAR) First Award, and Virginia Tech Civil Engineering’s Outstanding Young Alumni Achievement Award. His academic career has focused on research and teaching in environmental engineering. Dr. Bhandari has been a principal investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects worth >$5 million and has authored or co-authored >100 publications.
A Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Bhandari has served as an associate editor of ASCE's Journal of Environmental Engineering and ASCE's Journal of Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste Management, track co-chair for ASCE-EWRI international conferences, and an officer in several national committees of ASCE, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, and the Water Environment Federation.
Dr. Bhandari is a passionate educator. He has been a PI or Co-PI on several projects on scholarship of learning, has edited four books, and published thirteen book chapters. He is a recipient of ISU’s Miller Faculty Fellowship, KSU Chi Epsilon chapter's Teaching Excellence Award and its Advising Excellence Award. Dr. Bhandari is actively engaged in student life and has served as a faculty advisor to the ASCE Student Chapter at KSU, the Engineers Without Borders Student Chapter at KSU, and Engineers for a Sustainable World Student Chapter at ISU. Dr. Bhandari is a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award and Student Advocate Award from KSU’s ASCE student chapter and the Student Chapter Advisor Reward from ASCE-national.
